Dee Foster wants you to pay attention to your heating and cooling systems and do some of the simple things or call on someone to assist you in the simple maintenance that can help make your systems last for years.
* Filters are sooooo....... important! They must be installed and fit well to not allow air to pass around them. They must be changed or checked every 30 days. If using one of the electrostatic types it is extremely urged to check and wash them monthly, no excuses.
In Gas Furnaces the dirty filter slows air causing higher heat in chamber and more wasted heat up the flue, and possible damage to the furnace and unecessary cycling which wears on parts.
In Heat Pumps the dirty filter slows air and causes coil to heat too high in the furnace, increases pressure in the system, can cause refrigerant leaks later by stressing coil and tubing, puts excess wear on compressor and increased pressure can cause cycling, or failure because increased pressure causes excess compressor temperature, and uses more electrical power than necessary which can lead to compressor burnout and other parts failures.
Thermostats: Many have glass enclosed mercury switches which are attached to a wound Thermal sensitive metal that moves in variation of temperature. Setting Temperature is moving the BULB (mercury switch) to a position where thermal spring is balanced and balance of switch tips to make switch connect and call for heat or cool depending on Thermosatat selection switch. Most Common is the ROUND T87 Series Honeywell Stat. If you notice differences in settings and actual room temperatures, you may remove cover if you now how, and with compressed dust-off sprays or small very soft paint brush, dust off BULB and spring. Don't attempt to hold spring or BULB, as that may change calibration. Other Thermostats are bi-metal magnetic. Dust affects some of these, but usually doesn't.
